St Mary's Church

An outstanding example of Perpendicular Gothic architecture, completed in 1480 and largely unaltered since it was built. The church dominates the surrounding area with its pierced parapet roofline and massive 80 foot tower.

Original 15th century carved screens, doors and font cover reveal the skills of the mediaeval craftsmen who worked here. A peal of eight bells, including one dated 1410 and said to have been brought from Fountains Abbey at the Dissolution of the Monasteries, enhances this fine church.

Douglas Strachan’s memorial window is a noteworthy 20th century addition.
